How to Buy a Dell Laptop

How to Buy a Dell Laptop

Dell laptop lines include the Vostro, Latitude, Precision, Inspiron and XPS. Each one includes several models. While they all share some features, there are significant differences to look for when you buy a dell laptop.
Step1
Visit local laptop dealers, Dell's website and review sites like PC Magazine and CNET to get an overview of the various models. Check out their features, ratings and reviews.
Step2
Set a budget. There is a great price range among Dell laptop models. Keep in mind that you may want to purchase additional warranty support and hardware upgrades on lower priced models.
Step3
Identify your computing needs and the laptop's primary use. Generally, Latitude, Precision and Vostro are geared towards businesses users, and Inspiron and XPS to home users.
Step4
Consider the portability of the various models. Some XPS and Latitude models are ultra portable, weighing less than 5 pounds. Keep in mind that you may trade portability for screen size.
Step5
Figure out how much graphics capability you need. The Precision is the best choice for artists, designers, and engineers because of its ability to quickly create complex models and develop special effects. Some Inspiron and XPS models are great for gaming.
Step6
Evaluate the return policies, warranties and technical support of the various models. Warranties range from standard 1 year to 3 years. Some models offer North American-based technical support and lifetime phone support. Others include standard support limited to length of warranty term.
Step7
Choose the battery charging time that is right for you. Latitude and Precision include technology that allows the battery to be charged to 80 percent in about 1 hour. Keep in mind that a battery upgrade could add to the weight of the laptop.
Step8
Determine whether you need to share docking stations and peripherals with current and future models. Latitude and Precision lines are generally backward compatible. With other models, peripheral and component options change with product transitions.
Step9
Compare other special features. Models may include system maintenance tools, software that allows you to access to features without booting into Windows, cases that come in a range of colors and built-in broadband cards.
